This is a comprehensive document checklist for students applying for a study permit, combining information from relevant sources and the attached document. Please note that the checklist may vary depending on individual circumstances. If you find any information missing, let us know in the comments!
1. Academic Documents
- Most recent diploma/degree marksheets and certificates (consolidated marksheets are not accepted).
- CV and 2 Letters of Recommendation (LOR) – for master’s applicants.
Note: If applying for a master’s or postgraduate program, SLC and +2 academic documents are not required.
2. Letter of Explanation
- Keep it concise (more than 1200 words is not advisable unless you have a lot to explain).
3. Language Proficiency Test Results
- IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores.
4. Financial Documents
a. Bank Documents
- Bank statements for the last 5 months and a balance certificate.
- Sanction letter (if using an education loan) and disbursement letter (optional).
- Fixed deposit certificate.
b. Other Financial Documents
- Property valuation (accepted from an engineer or ward office).
- Employment letter with payslip (not older than 2 months, including job description, position, salary, allowances, and years of employment).
- Rent agreement with tax-paid receipt.
- Agriculture income verification.
- Land lease agreement with tax-paid receipt.
- Business partnership certificate with an audit report and PAN.
- Notarized sponsor letter.
c. Ward Documents
- Tax clearance.
- Address verification (if required).
- Relationship verification with citizenship.
5. University/College Documents
- Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Note: The LOA must be on official letterhead, show the exact tuition fees, anticipated start and end dates, and the registration deadline. - Tuition fee paid receipt (TT copy not required).
- Scholarship letter (if applicable).
- Any letter indicating co-op work practicum requirements (if applicable).
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)/Territorial Attestation Letter (TAL): Required for most study permit applications as of January 22, 2024. Applications without a PAL/TAL or proof of meeting an exception will not be processed.
- Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ): Required if studying in Québec. As of February 13, 2024, the updated CAQ includes information about the provincial attestation letter.
6. Additional Documents (Where Applicable)
- Experience letter with ID card.
- Marriage certificate.
- Birth certificate for each accompanying dependent child.
- Previous passports showing travel history.
- Police report.
- Accompanying spouse and children of all ages must submit their own application forms.
7. Visa Documents
- Application for Study Permit Made Outside of Canada (IMM 1294).
Note: If completed on a computer, validate the form to generate a barcode page. Place the barcode page on top of your application. - Family Information Form (IMM 5707) – for applicants 18 years or older or minors travelling alone.
- Statutory Declaration of Common-law Union (IMM 5409) – if applicable.
- Use of a Representative Form (IMM 5476) – if using an authorized representative.
- Authority to Release Personal Information Form (IMM 5475) – if authorizing someone to access your case file.
- Custodian Declaration for Minors Studying in Canada (IMM 5646) – if the minor is under 17 years old.
- Proof of payment (processing fees, biometric fees, etc.).
- Photocopy of the information page of your valid passport (including passport number, issuance/expiry dates, photo, name, date, and place of birth).
- Two photos meeting Visa application specifications (name and date of birth written on the back).
Note: If providing biometrics, paper photos are not required.
8. Proof of Financial Support
- If studying for less than one year: Proof of financial support for the entire duration of your studies.
- If studying for more than one year: Proof of financial support for the first year of your studies.
Note: Refer to the IRCC website for current financial requirements, as they are adjusted annually.
9. Medical Exam
- Required if:
- You plan to stay in Canada for more than 6 months.
- You recently spent time in certain countries.
- You plan to work in certain jobs where public health must be protected.
Note: It’s not mandatory to complete a medical exam before submitting your application, but it’s highly recommended. Do not submit your application until at least one week after your medical examination.
10. Optional Documents (Can Be Excluded)
- Property valuation (if you have an education loan).
- Birth certificate for the primary applicant.
- Ward income verification (if you are submitting a CA report).
Important Notes
- Any document not in English or French must be translated and notarized.
- Documents uploaded in their original English version do not require notarization.
- Submit your application at least three months before your proposed travel date.
